چکیده

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) currently provides by far the largest homogeneous sample of intermediate signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) optical spectra of galaxies and quasars. The fully automated SDSS spectroscopic reduction pipeline has provided spectra of unprecedented quality that cover the wavelength range 3800 − 9200 Å. However, in common with spectra from virtually all multi-object surveys employing fibres, there remain significant systematic residuals in many of the spectra due to the incomplete subtraction of the strong OH sky emission lines longward of 6700 Å. These sky lines affect almost half the wavelength range of the SDSS spectra, and the S/N over substantial wavelength regions in many spectra is reduced by more than a factor of 2 over that expected from counting statistics. We present a method to automatically remove the sky residual signal, using a principal component analysis (PCA) which takes advantage of the correlation in the form of the sky subtraction residuals present in each spectrum. Application of the method results in spectra with essentially no evidence for degradation due to the incomplete subtraction of OH emission features. A dramatic improvement in the quality of a substantial number of spectra, particularly those of faint objects such as the bulk of the high-redshift quasars, is achieved. We make available IDL code and documentation to implement the sky residual subtraction scheme on SDSS spectra included in the public data releases. To ensure that absorption and emission features intrinsic to the object spectra do not affect the subtraction procedure line masks must be created that depend on the scientific application of interest. We illustrate the power of the sky-residual subtraction scheme using samples of SDSS galaxy and quasar spectra, presenting tests involving the near-infrared CaII triplet absorption, metal absorption line features in damped Lyα systems and composite spectra of high-redshift quasars.

A method to remove residual OH emission from near infrared spectra ⋆

I present a technique to remove the residual OH airglow emission from near infrared spectra. Historically, the need to subtract out the strong and variable OH airglow emission lines from 1–2.5micron spectra has imposed severe restrictions on observational strategy. For integral field spectroscopy, where the field of view is limited, the standard technique is to observe blank sky frames at regul...

Improved and Quality-assessed Emission and Absorption Line Measurements in Sloan Digital Sky Survey Galaxies

We present a new database of absorption and emission-line measurements based on the entire spectral atlas from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 7 data release of galaxies within a redshift of 0.2. Our work makes use of the publicly available penalized pixel-fitting (pPXF) and gas and absorption line fitting (gandalf) IDL codes, aiming to improve the existing measurements for stellar kinemati...

Introduction: The present study aimed to compare the cleaning efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), self-adjusting file (SAF), EndoVac, and conventional syringe irrigation (CSI) techniques on Ca(OH)2 removal from the root canal. Methods: This study was conducted on the mesial roots of 36 human mandibular molar teeth. After 1 month, the Ca(...

Radio emission and active galactic nucleus feedback in post-starburst galaxies

We investigate radio-mode AGN activity among post-starburst galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to determine whether AGN feedback may be responsible for the cessation of star formation. Based on radio morphology and radio loudness from the FIRST and NVSS data, we separate objects with radio activity due to an AGN from ongoing residual star formation. Of 513 SDSS galaxies with stro...

A New Automated Classification Technique of Galaxy Spectra with Z<1.2 Based On PCA-ODP

In this paper, we investigate the Principal Component Analysis-Optimal Discrimination Plane (PCA-ODP) approach for the classification of galaxy spectra on a data set of galaxy spectra including eleven standard subtypes with the redshift value ranging from 0 to 1.2. These eleven subtypes are E, S0, Sa, Sb, Sc, SB1, SB2, SB3, SB4, SB5, SB6, respectively, according to the Hubble sequence. Among th...
